VOLPE ROSA 2016
Words fail us before one of the most earth-shatteringly delicious rosès out there. The perfect antithesis of pale, dead salmon-hued commercial pink stuff, this is an esoteric and mystical beast. It comes from a 40 years old biodynamically farmed vineyard of the ancient and almost extinct Campania red grape Coda di Volpe Rosa, which ferments spontaneously with 2 days of skin contact and then ages no less than 12 months in chestnut barrels, being then bottled with no fining, filtration or added SO2. The 2017 is more opulently massive than the preceding vintages, with such power though perfectly balanced by an unending freshness and just a hint of volatile beautifully integrated in such a fascinating canvas. Intense, challenging and unendingly profound: smoked watermelon with cloves and candied bergamot, dark marasca cherries soaked in Armagnac and dark spices, pomegranate and black pepper.
